Diary, 1835 Oct. 15 - Nov. 9, kept by Russell on her voyage from New York to Mobile, Ala. and up the Alabama River to Tallassee, Ala. Contains observations and impressions of fellow travellers, accommodations, social activities and the Alabama towns she travels through. Describes Mobile, Cahaba, Montgomery, Mount Meigs and Line Creek, Ala. Attached is a typed ten page manuscript (n.d., no author) entitled "A Diary, A Portrait, and a Story" which contains biographical information about Russell and a partial transcription of the diary.

A native of Springfield, Mass., Melissa Russell was the sister of Henry Russell, an Indian agent working near Tallassee, Ala. In 1835 she accompanied her brother and his new wife to Ala. Once there she met Perley Gerald and they were married in 1836 Mar. Melissa Russell Gerald died approximately one year later after being thrown from a horse. From the description of Diary, 1835.
